Memory Fragments
for Ensemble (2025)
This piece was originally written for four cellos, as part of my participation in the CelloWercken Zutphen music festival. The inspiration came from an installation artwork by Pieter van der Schaaf, which explores the flow of memory through fragmentation. In response to this visual language, I composed a series of contrasting musical fragments, each with its own character and texture. These fragments were deliberately cut, reassembled, and reorganized — turning memory into something non-linear, torn apart and stitched back together, constantly flashing and shifting. In this new version for ensemble, I kept the original collage-like structure, allowing the music to express a kind of "memory mechanism" through change, contrast, and collision
Wait...Nevermind
for Timpani Solo(2025)
Wait, Nevermind is a work composed for Timpani. The entire piece grows from a single motive, whose continuous transformation and repetition shape the structural logic of the music. This motive repeatedly expands and recedes, creating a sense of tension that feels like “words on the tip of the tongue, yet unsaid.” In this process, the music reveals a dynamic state of constant oscillation.
Eclipse
for Three Violins (2024)
Eclipse is a composition for three violins, each representing a celestial body: the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. Each instrument follows its own orbit—a distinct musical path—moving independently through space and sound. At the heart of the piece lies a fleeting moment of perfect alignment. Like a solar eclipse, the three voices converge into a single point of unity before drifting apart once more. Through cycles of motion and stillness, separation and convergence, the music reflects the quiet, gravitational dance of these celestial bodies.
Glückspiel
for four Timpani (2024)
This piece is dedicated to Yue WU for her master’s graduation concert. The title Gluckspiel means both “game of luck” and “gamble.” Each movement is linked to numbers, leading to different endings—like dice being thrown. The video, created by Yuwen HUANG, shows images of games and amusement scenes, without a visible player. Everything seems to run by itself, in a foggy and uncertain atmosphere. Later, a candle and a child appear as symbols of time and life. The candle burns down like a countdown, reminding us that every choice—both in the game and in life—is shaped by limited time and chance.
An Unquenchable Fire
for Trio (2024)
An Unquenchable Fire was created for CelloWercken Zutphen in the Netherlands, inspired by the work of artist Ruthi Helbitz Cohen. Its title is drawn from Rachel Pollack’s novel Unquenchable Fire. The piece reflects women’s unease under suppression, their resistance against imposed destinies, and the unquenchable spirit that refuses to be silenced.
Burning Fog
for ensemble (2023)
“Burning Fog” was inspired by the current turbulent and unstable social realities, as well as by the various fears and uncertainties that lie hidden beneath the surface. The lingering effects of historical burdens and religious themes in modern society, along with the recurrence of past events, form a dense, seemingly burning layer of fog. The piece employs a rhythmic code of 1+1+1… and experiments with new sound possibilities to create an atmosphere in which power and tension coexist.
Chopsticks
for two Percussionists (2023)
Chopsticks are not only a cultural emblem of everyday life and communal dining in East Asia, but also a metaphor for the intimacy and distance embedded in the act of eating together. In this work, they are transformed into a medium of sound — no longer confined to the role of utensils, but reinterpreted as instruments that strike, scrape, and resonate with diverse materials.
